4-H helpers learning about seedlings

Elizabeth Kinkade, 14, a 4-Her from Albany counted seedlings and packed orders in saw dust Friday afternoon. Here is her comments about the sale and  Friday afternoon.


"I really enjoy helping out at the sale. Filling orders, counting seedlings and wrapping them is a lot of fun. One of the best parts of it to me is meeting and helping new people and also seeing people I saw last year that I had enjoyed working with. It also helps me in 4-H by being able to identify some of the plants as seedlings. I have been helping out at the seedling sale for 4 or 5 years now and would like keep doing it for years to come."

A few years ago I read the book “The Wild Trees,” by Richard Preston.  In it, he tells the almost unbelievable story of Steve Sillett (and a few other botanist’s) exploration of the largest and tallest trees in the world.  These are the coast Redwoods of Northern California.  They explored and measured the height of these trees by climbing them.  Many memories and emotions washed past as I read this book.  I was repeatedly amazed that these young explorers did not think “there is nothing new to learn,”did not believe that there was no new place to explore.  They went where others refused to go.  They invented new ways to climb these massive trees with ropes.  On May 11, 1998 Steve Sillett and Michael Taylor pushed, crawled and fell through a part of the Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park...

Otis tree tour touts history, family efforts

Three generations of Tim and Kathy Otis’ family helped tell the story of a historic family tree farm — as the Linn County Small Woodlands Association honored its annual tree farmers of the year. The Otis family hosted the July 6 afternoon tour and potluck picnic on property off Ingram Road near Waterloo. The tree farm property has been in family ownership for more than 150 years. Historic photos, maps of the property and the property’s forest management plan were on display for visitors. Otis family children Steve and Erin spoke about the trials and tribulations of ancestor Capt. William Ingram traveling from the East Coast through treacherous Nicaragua and then up the Columbia River to Oregon City in the early 1850s. Tim and Kathy Otis, with much help from family, manage more than 370 acres of forest land in the Middle Ridge area between Brownsville and Lebanon.
